Sustaining coastal fisheries in Pacific Island countries
Most Pacific Island countries are highly dependent on fish as a source of protein. Concern has been raised that these communities could face a
food shortage by 2030, caused by climate change impacts, overfishing and population growth.
A research project has been launched by the University of Wollongong’s Global Challenges Program, in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the World Fish Centre, to improve coastal fisheries in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Kiribati.
Dr Quentin Hanich from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) leads his team. They will mainly be working in
Kiribati with small communities on a couple of different islands, but they’ll also be working with the government when it comes to issues like regulation and
export permits. Janai Velez reports.
